Tasting - Duchman Sangiovese

Name: Duchman Sangiovese
Variety: 100% Sangiovese
Region: High Plains, Texas
Country: United States
Year: 2010
Price: $19.95

Winery Review: The fruit from ReddyVineyards and Martin Vineyards originates in the High Plains, while Limestone Terrace fruit is grown in the Hill Country just outside Wimberley. Three vineyards, three very distinct takes on Sangiovese. In most vintages we will blend the 3 to make one harmonious wine, but in special years, each of the three crops will be vinified and bottled separately.

My Review: This wine had a very spicy, woody aroma that was almost overpowering. I did not get much flavor from thsi wine but it had a spicy, tannic finish that I did not like.

I did not have this wine with food.

The approachable qualities in this light bodied red make it an easy match for both people and dishes. Feature this wine with your next chicken dinner or cheeses from all over the world.

Winery Review: Spanish-style red wine made to give a tip of the hat to both the Spanish explorers who first crossed the Texas High Plains, and to those who first envisioned a Texas wine industry> This delicious blend is packed full of juicy bramble fruit, tobacco leaf, and spice. The wine fermented in stainless steel and aged fourteen months in new and neutral French oak giving more weight than 2010 but still round tannins and a pleasantly savory finish. Enjoy this wine on its own or with your favorite Texas BBQ.

My Review: This wine had a smoky, oak aroma as well as some tobacco aromas. However, after tasting, the berry fruit flavors came through and it was nicely balanced. There was a light tannic finish that surprisingly had some acidity to it.

Homemade Italian Dinner

My parents with the Italian dinner we made
On Sunday March 9th, 2014, my parents and I made a food and wine pairing with Italian wines and foods. I chose an Italian theme because in May, my family and I will be traveling to Italy for vacation, part of which will be spent wine tasting in Tuscany. I thought this was a perfect experiment to try and see how some Italian wines paired up with Italian dishes.

We had three fairly simple traditional Italian dishes. The first was Bruschetta for an appetizer. We followed this simple recipe to make the Bruschetta. Bruschetta Recipe

Tomatoes, Basil, Olive Oil, Garlic and Balsamic Vinegar to create the topping
The topping was fairly simple to create and only used 5 ingredients. Once the the ingredients were combined, the salt and pepper were added to give extra flavoring.

Finished Bruschetta topping
After the topping was prepared, we chilled it in the fridge while we prepared the bread. A baguette was sliced and olive oil was brushed on the top to help the toasting process.
Brushing the baguette with olive oil
Oil brushed onto the baguette
Once the bread was toasted, the Bruschetta topping was placed on top and was ready to eat!
Finished Bruschetta
The next dish prepared was an entree of Chicken Parmesan. The chicken was first lightly breaded then pan fried to cook.
Chicken with breading before cooking
Chicken after cooking
Once all the chicken was cooked, the tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese was used to cover the chicken before going into the oven.

Chicken Parmesan before going into the oven
Chicken Parmesan after baking
Once the chicken was cooked and the pasta prepared, our second dish was done!
Main dish: Chicken Parmesan
Finally dinner was finished with a Tiramisu that was refrigerated until after dinner.
Tiramisu!
The three wines chosen were a Pinot Grigio, Chianti and a Moscato D'Asti. While the Pinot Grigio was chosen for the Bruschetta, the Chianti for the Chicken Parmesan and the Moscato for the Tiramisu, each wine was tried with each dish.
The two dishes minus the Tiramisu
Following are my notes on each wine itself as well as how it compared with each dish.

Name: Ecco Domani
Variety: 100% Pinot Grigio
Region: Venezie
Country: Italy
Year: 2012
Price: $7.95

Winery Review: This wine has a clear, straw yellow color, with light golden reflections. It has tropical fruit notes that make this unique vintage truly exotic, with apple and pineapple aromas and flavors. The wine is light bodied, with a pleasantly soft palate and a long finish.

Alone: This wine had nice peach and floral aromas but with some acidity. After tasting, there were light fruit flavors though the wine was a bit thin and had a slightly acidic finish.

Bruschetta: The bruschetta made this wine more bitter with a stronger acidic bite but it helped give the wine more body. It wasn't the best pairing but not bad.

Chicken Parmesan: With the chicken parmesan, once again the acidity was brought out and the fruit flavors muted. I think the sauce overpowered the wine and was not a great pairing.

Tiramisu: Again this wine was overpowered by the Tiramisu since the dessert was so sweet. However, it did reduce the acidity of the wine and made the finish smoother. This was not a bad pairing.

Name: Nipozzano Chianti Rufina
Variety: 90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot
Region: Tuscany
Country: Italy
Year: 2010
Price: $17.95

Winery Review: Very juicy, modern Chianti with bright cherry and blackberry fruit. A well made Chianti with polished tannins and wonderful balance.

Alone: The aroma was somewhat smoky, oaky and slightly jammy. After tasting, there were some fruit flavors with a light tannic finish. The wine was well balanced and overall not a bad red wine.

Bruschetta: The bruschetta did not change the way this wine tasted. It seems that the food and wine balanced each other and did not change either one so not a bad pairing.

Chicken Parmesan: With the Chicken Parmesan, the jammy flavors present in the wine alone were gone and a more tannic structure was present in the mid palate. It paired better than the Pinot Grigio since it was a more full bodied wine and was not overpowered by the sauce. Overall, a pretty good pairing.

Tiramisu: With the Tiramisu, the tannins were smoothed out and the wine was very smooth. The coffee flavors of the Tiramisu brought out the oak and woody flavors of the wine but still maintained a nice balance. Overall, this was not a bad pairing with the Tiramisu.

Name: Risata Moscato d'Asti
Variety: 100% Moscato
Region: Piedmont
Country: Italy
Year: N/A
Price: $11.00

Winery Review: This Moscato d'Asti is fresh, fragrant, and frizzante with vibrant flavors and aromas of ripe stone fruit, tangerines and honey. The wine is concentrated and flavorful but not overly rich or heavy; sweet, yet balanced.

Alone: This wine had a very sweet tropical fruit and sugary aroma. After tasting, some mango flavors along with the sugary carbonation were present. A nice light dessert wine.

Bruschetta: With the bruschetta, the moscato had a slight bitter finish though overall was still sweet and sugary. This could have been due to the acidity in the tomatoes. While not the best pairing, it was not the worst.

Chicken Parmesan: Tasting this wine with the Chicken Parmesan, the sweetness of the wine was cut back which gave it better balance. It was still sweet and carbonated but it paired quite well with the chicken.

Tiramisu: Finally, the Tiramisu also cut the sweetness down on the wine as well as lowered the carbonation. There was a nice balance between the fruity flavors of the Moscato and the coffee flavors of the Tiramisu. These two probably paired the best of all the wine and food combinations.

Tasting - Loredona Riesling

Name: Loredona Riesling
Variety: 100% Riesling
Region: Monterey, California

My Review: This wine had a nice sweet, fruity aroma to it of summer fruits. After tasting, the citrus and peach flavors were definitely present and had a nice slightly acidic finish to keep it from being too sweet.

Tasting - Arnold Palmer Chardonnay

Name: Arnold Palmer Chardonnay
Variety: 100% Chardonnay
Region: American Canyon, California
Country: United States
Year: 2011
Price: $20.00

Winery Review: A vibrant Chardonnay from vineyards in cooler climates of California. Chardonnay is well known for its characteristic fresh apple fruit aromas and rounded rich flavors. Weather during the 2011 harvest provided ideal growing conditions for lush, yet perfectly balanced fruit.

My Review: This Chardonnay had a smoky aroma with some fruit aromas coming through. After tasting, it had a buttery start with a tart finish and some lemon zest flavors coming through the middle. While not the worst, it was a bit too buttery and smoky for me.

I did not have this wine with food.

My Review: This wine had a very floral, slightly acidic nose. Upon tasting, I did not get many flavors unfortunately. The wine was very thin and bitter for me and was not very good.

I did not have this wine with food.

I did not have this wine with food.

Tasting - Familia Pacheco Jumilla

Name: Familia Pacheco Jumilla
Variety: 80% Monastrell, 20% Syrah
Region: Jumilla
Country: Spain
Year: 2011
Price: $8.95

Winery Review: This coupage of Monastrell and Syrah is dark red-maroon in color with a full body. Red berry aromas can be appreciated on the nose, with a slight touch of lactose and balsamic sensations. Familia Paco Pacheco Organic is a balanced, full-bodied, fresh wine enhanced by seasoned tannins and the reoccuring traces of ripe fruit.

My Review: This wine had a very distinct new tire smell and some spices on the aroma. After tasting, there was definite spices present with a dry finish that was a bit dry. I did not get fruit flavor from this wine and it was not one of my favorites.

I did not have food with this wine.

Tasting - Les Ramparts Bordeaux 2010

Name: Les Ramparts Bordeaux 2010
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot
Region: Bordeaux
Country: France
Year: 2010
Price: $8.95

Winery Review: Features good crushed berry fruit, with a savory lacing and a flash of dark licorice on the finish. Fresh and direct.

My Review: This wine had a very smoky, oaky aroma that was immediately present. After tasting, there were flavors of berry fruits although there was a tannic finish which cut the fruits short. This wine was a bit too smoky and tannic for my taste.

I did not have wine with this food.

Tasting - Ryan Patrick Riesling

My Review: This wine had a sweet grapefruit like smell with light floral and herby aromas. After tasting, it was very smooth but had a nice tart finish. The wine was not overly sweet but was a nice balance between sweet and dry. One of the best Rieslings I've tried.

I did not have this with food.

Tasting - De Martino Legado Reserva Chardonnay

Name: De Martino Legado Reserva Chardonnay
Variety: 100% Chardonnay
Region: Limari Valley
Country: Chile
Year: 2010
Price: $10.95

Winery Review: The 2010 Legado Chardonnay Reserve is aged in French oak for 11 months. It has a light hazelnut scented bouquet with a touch o f wild mushroom. The palate is medium-bodied with a beeswax and spice infused entry, crisp acidity and a phenolic, slightly overworked but still intriguing finish of dried pineapple and honeycomb.

My Review: This Chardonnay definitely had the characteristics of an oak aged Chardonnay. It had a oaky, somewhat buttery aroma. Upon tasting, the oak was present and the wine throughout was very creamy and smooth with no fruit flavors. I did not like this wine since it was too oaky and creamy and not acidic and fruit flavored.

I did not have this wine with food.

Tasting - Chateau du Trignon Roussanne

Name: Chateau du Trignon Roussane
Variety: 100% Roussane
Region: Cotes du Rhone
Country: France
Year: 2012
Price: $17.95

Winery Review: It's unusual to find 100% Roussanne wines, but this is a terrific example at a realistic price. It's broad and mouth-coating but still seems fresh, with melon, pear and pineapple flavors that linger on the tightly focused finish. Drink over the next year or two.

My Review: This wine had a very light fruit aroma but not much else. The wine was very smooth with little acidity after tasting but there wasn't much flavor. It seemed too thin and I did not really get much from this wine.

I did not have this wine with food.

Tasting - Ryan Patrick Chardonnay

Winery Review: A very stylish effort with crisp, zippy fruit showing pineapple, lime and star fruit. Great mouthfeel and very refreshing finish. The wine puts the fruit out in front.

My Review: This wine had a fruity and slightly acidic aroma. Upon tasting, the acidic component was definitely present and was bitter to the taste. While not bad, the tart and acidic components were a bit strong.

Country: Italy
Year: 2011
Price: $15.95

Winery Review: A wine sourced purely from Primitivo grapes grown and harvested throughout Lizzano, Torricella and Taranto. The long maceration of the skins provides a rich extraction and an intense, deep ruby red color with a particular aroma of blackberry and plum. The smoothness of its palates amazes as its flavor whole and persistent with a pleasant sweetness in the end. An ideal complement to meats, game and cheeses.

My Review: This wine had a very oaky aroma. The start was smooth with a nice plum flavor that carried through the wine. The finish was not too tannic and overall was not a bad red wine.

Tasting - Marc Roman Malbec

Name: Marc Roman Malbec
Variety: 100% Malbec
Region: Languedoc Roussillon
Country: France
Year: 2011
Price: $10.95

Winery Review: A heat loving varietal, Malbec thrives in the warm sunshine of Southern France where consistent weather and patience allow tannins to ripen fully. It's this warm climate that allows Marc Roman to make a rich and velvety Malbec, packed with black spice notes and dark berry fruit.

My Review: This wine had a very woody and smoky aroma. There were nice fruity flavors after tasting with a light tannic finish. However, though the different components were not overpowering, the wine seemed a bit thin for a red which took away from its fullness.

I did not have this wine with food.

Tasting - La Linda Viognier

Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2012

Winery Review: Exotic, clear bright, almost gold in color. Well defined notes of orchid, musk and ripe apricot. It reveals an unctuous texture on the palate. Long aftertaste with piercing acidity.

My Review: This wine had a distinct musty smell with hints of ripe fruit. After tasting, there was a nice white peach flavor with an acidic finish. While there was some white peach flavor, the wine was still fairly thin which took away from the overall quality.

I did not have this wine with food.
